BOOKS ON THE MOVE / MALAYSIA

“Devote yourself to loving others, devote yourself to your community around you, and devote yourself to creating something that gives you purpose and meaning.” Several years ago I picked up the book Tuesdays with Morrie and this quote from the book has since became my mantra in life and one of my biggest inspirations to initiate Books on the Move in Malaysia – Carol Koh, Founder.

Carol talks about why she started Books on the Move, Malaysia.
I grew up in Kuala Lumpur, the multicultural capital city of Malaysia and have always been passionate about reading books in different languages, biographies or memoirs are my favourite! In my marketing career at the British High Commission of KL, I had the opportunity to lead on a series of education-related campaigns. It made me realize the importance of language skills in building employability and career prospects. One of the best ways to strengthen language skills is through reading. Being a passionate reader myself, I have noticed the benefits of reading and how it contributes to my personal growth and development.

One day I came across a viral video of Emma Watson dropping books on the London Underground to support Books on the Underground, that instantly gave me the idea to do something similar in Malaysia to cultivate reading culture among the community. Hence I got in touch with the founder Hollie Fraser who created the movement five years ago in London. “Very delighted to hear that the idea is expanding so far and wide!” Hollie wrote back and encouraged me to roll out the project in Malaysia. So here I am - managing Books on the Move for Malaysia since April 2017! Very proud to see the movement expanding each day with increasing number of volunteers and book drops taking place all over Malaysia! To see the community excited and supportive towards a common goal, this is my biggest motivation and keeps me going! Keep calm and read on.
